How to Use Perplexity Research for Deep Reports
Run Perplexity Research for multi source reports with a clear brief, staged questions, citation checks, and a workflow that turns raw findings into usable documents.
Perplexity Research is the mode built for deeper multi source investigation. Where Search optimizes for speed, Research spends more effort gathering and synthesizing across pages so you can draft longer reports. You select Research from the mode selector on web, mobile, and the Mac app. Free plans include limited Research access. Pro at $20 per month on https://www.perplexity.ai/hub/pricing extends Research and Pro Search. Confirm live limits in Perplexity help. Tool context lives at /explore/perplexity.
This guide shows a report workflow: brief, Research run, structure, verification, and handoff. Pair it with fast Search at /blog/how-to-use-perplexity-for-fast-web-search-and-better-answers and with formatting patterns at /blog/how-to-get-structured-and-formatted-answers-from-perplexity.
When Research is the right mode
Choose Research when you need a landscape overview, a literature style map, a competitive brief, or a policy scan that must pull from many sources. Choose Search when one or two pages would answer the question. Choose Pro Search when the task is multi step and harder, such as chaining constraints across several sub questions. Help also mentions Best and Reasoning Search. Use the live mode labels in your product rather than memorizing a fixed menu.
Research still needs a human editor. It accelerates gathering. It does not replace opening key citations or judging source quality for high stakes work.
How Research fits the product
Research runs a deeper pass across sources and returns a longer synthesis with citations. Threads keep context so you can ask for sections, tables, or revisions without restating the whole brief. Pro subscribers also get model selection and Best mode that can auto pick. Model lists change. Pro help has listed models such as GPT 5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6, and Gemini 3.1 Pro among others. Always check the live model list in product.
If your organization later needs programmatic retrieval, the API at https://docs.perplexity.ai uses separate credit billing. This guide stays on the consumer Research workflow in the apps.
Step by step Research workflow
1. Write a one page research brief
Define the question, audience, must include sources, exclusions, and the deliverable shape. A weak brief produces a long essay that is hard to reuse.
Research brief Question: How are mid market CRM vendors handling AI features in 2026? Audience: product managers evaluating build vs buy Must include: official product pages, pricing pages, recent release notes Exclude: pure affiliate roundups Deliverable: 1500 word report with exec summary, vendor table, risks, open questions Success: every price or limit claim has a citation
2. Seed with Search if needed
Sometimes a quick Search pass finds the right vendor list or glossary before Research. Seed names improve Research focus.
Seed Search: List 8 mid market CRM products commonly compared for teams of 50 to 200 seats. Return only names and official URLs. No feature essays yet.
3. Launch Research with output shape
Paste the brief into Research and specify sections. Ask for conflict notes. Ask for primary source preference.
Mode: Research Use the research brief above. Section order: 1) Executive summary (max 180 words) 2) Method and source priorities 3) Vendor by vendor findings 4) Comparison table 5) Risks and unknowns 6) Recommended next diligence steps Cite claims. Prefer official docs.
4. Request missing slices in the thread
After the first draft, ask for gaps only. Do not regenerate the whole report unless structure failed.
Follow up in thread: Expand only the pricing and AI feature rows for vendors missing official citations. Add a Conflicts section listing any disagreeing sources. Keep prior sections unchanged unless a factual fix is required.
5. Verify, then export your own document
Copy the synthesis into your doc tool. Replace shaky claims. Keep citation links in footnotes or a source appendix.

Research prompt library
These prompts cover common report shapes. Keep the brief fields filled in before you run Research so the model does not invent scope.
Market landscape report
Produce a landscape report on [market]. Geography: [regions] Buyer: [persona] Cover: category definition, major vendors, pricing patterns, switching costs, 2026 trends with citations. End with: what a buyer should verify on sales calls.
Academic style evidence map
Create an evidence map for [research question]. Prefer: peer reviewed reviews, preprints from known labs, official statistics agencies. For each source: citation, year, method in one line, main finding in one line. Separate: strong evidence vs weak or indirect evidence.
Policy comparison memo
Compare [policy A] and [policy B] for [stakeholder]. Sources: primary legal or government texts first. Output: similarities, differences, enforcement signals, practical impacts. Flag: secondary commentary vs primary text.
Technology due diligence pack
Diligence pack for evaluating [vendor] as a dependency. Include: security pages, status page history themes, pricing, data residency claims, API docs overview. Cite official pages. Note what is not publicly documented.
Hiring and labor market scan
Scan public signals for [role] hiring demand in [region]. Sources: major job boards summaries, official labor stats if available, reputable news. Do not invent salary medians. Only report figures that appear in cited sources. Include uncertainty notes.
Historical context brief
Explain the history of [topic] with a dated timeline. Prefer encyclopedic and museum or archive primary pages when relevant. Mark contested interpretations separately from settled chronology.
Consumer product deep dive
Deep dive on [product category] for buyers who care about [priority]. Include: how products differ, what specs matter, common failure modes from reviews, warranty patterns. Cite manufacturer pages for specs and clearly label review based opinions.
Nonprofit or NGO topic report
Report on [social issue] focusing on interventions with public evidence. Prefer: NGO primary reports, government evaluations, major journal reviews. Avoid: viral posts without primary backing. Output: what works signals, gaps, and citation backed open questions.
Revision prompt for length
Revise the prior Research answer: Cut marketing language. Keep all citations. Compress vendor sections to 120 words each. Move raw URL lists to a Sources appendix.
Executive one pager ask
From the Research report already in this thread, produce a one page exec brief: - Bottom line in 3 sentences - 5 bullets of evidence with citation numbers - 3 risks - 3 diligence questions for next week
Verification and quality control
Research output can feel complete while still missing a primary page. Open the citations behind any claim you will publish or buy against. For citation technique see /blog/how-to-fact-check-information-with-perplexity-citations. For mode choice involving Pro Search see /blog/how-to-use-perplexity-pro-search-and-choose-the-right-model.
Keep Max plan mentions high level. Official pricing lists Max at $200 per month. Check the live page for what it includes rather than repeating third party summaries.
- Confirm Pro versus Free access expectations on the official pricing page and help center
- Do not invent daily quotas. Look up current limits when planning volume
- Store your final report outside Perplexity with source links preserved
- Re run Research after major market events rather than trusting a week old thread
- Share reports as structured notes with open questions listed clearly
Budget editing time before you schedule the Research run. A clean brief plus thirty minutes of citation opens usually beats an hour of rewriting a vague essay that never named the audience.
When a topic moves quickly, start a fresh Research thread instead of stretching an old one. Live retrieval helps only when the question is asked against current pages again.
Share the final report as structured notes with method, findings, and open questions. Raw chat exports are harder for teammates to trust and harder to update next quarter.
Common mistakes
- Launching Research with no audience, exclusions, or deliverable shape
- Accepting long prose without opening citations for numbers
- Using Research for a one fact lookup that Search would finish faster
- Regenerating entire reports instead of targeted follow ups
- Mixing confidential strategy docs into prompts
- Assuming model choice stays fixed without checking the live list
- Publishing Research text as final without an editor pass
